Interbike 2009 – BIKND
By
In my opinion, Interbike 2009 has been largely disappointing but there are still a few gems out there, one of them being the BIKND Helium bicycle travel case.
With airlines imposing restrictions and charges on the size and weight of your bike bag, it has become increasingly more important to ensure that this critical piece of luggage is minimised as far as possible. Gone are the days where one would throw your race kit and toolbox in the bottom of your bike bag because it was free weight. Now you find yourself debating the merits of adding a plastic pump and coming up with innovative ways to transport basic items.
In steps BIKND with a lightweight (8.5kg, 18.5lbs), compact bike case that will make the airlines happy while still leaving some change in your pocket for a cup of coffee.
Among it’s unique features is the 360° opening which makes packing a breeze. It also has space for two wheelsets which is another dilemma I always face when packing. When going away for a long time, I don’t want to only have my race wheels and usually pack my training wheels and then try my luck at taking my race wheels as carry on luggage.
Protection comes in the shape of an air pocket that you inflate with a footpump. I haven’t found anything more about this but it would be great if you could use your bike pump with an adaptor thus solving the issue of whether to travel with a pump or not.
The only concern I have with this system is that most airlines manhandle your baggage and I am not sure if the air pockets will survive the efforts of your average baggage handler. BIKND claim the bag will withstand the abuse, so for now I will take their word for it.
Unfortunately it will only be available from January 2010 so I am still at a loose end for Clearwater. If you have any brilliant ideas or suggestions please post a comment below.
