Kiwi’s lead the way Philly

In a race turned into a duathlon due a tragedy the previous day, it was New Zealand’s Nicky Samuels and Bevan Docherty that took the first round of the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon Series in Philadelphia.

After a 40 year old man went missing in the Schuylkill River during the previous days Karr Barth CHOP Charity Challenge, it was decided to cancel the swim leg and instead the elite fields would contest a 5km run, 40km bike, 10km run duathlon instead.

Docherty wasted no time opening up a 30 second lead with a 15:26, 5km run and while he was caught by eventual runner up David Thompson on the bike, it was never going to be enough to deny him, as he once again used his run speed to cruise to victory. Behind Thompson held onto an easy second, while Tyler Butterfield took third ahead of, a seemingly out of sorts, Matt Reed.

Samuels also used the initial 5km run leg to get a 39 second gap on Jenna Shoemaker before heading out onto the bike course, where Shoemaker made up the deficit and the pair entered T2 together. Once again it was the run speed of the Kiwi athlete that took her to a 15 second victory over the tenacious Shoemaker.

The rest of the women’s field was left languishing in the wake of these two athletes with Nicole Kelleher taking third ahead of Pip Taylor and Mary-Beth Ellis.

Don strides to victory

After a long absence from the top step of the podium and a brief foray into 10,000m track racing, Tim Don returned to the winners circle with a commanding victory over Kiwi, Kris Gemmell in Des Moines, Iowa.

It was the current world ranked one and two athletes, Alexander Brukhankov and Dmitry Polyansky that lead the field out of the water with Polyansky just edging ahead for the $5,000 swim prime but it didn’t take long for a group of 55 to form on the bike. Of them, only Ryan Sissons was interested in making a race of it and once his two lap attack was neutralised it was a matter of waiting for the run.

Don and Gemmell were the first two athletes out onto the run course and Don wasted no time in upping the pace as Gemmell and Olympic Champion, Jan Frodeno, fell back. Frodeno continued to chase Don while Gemmell went back to the comfort of the lead bunch that also included, Courtney Atkinson, Brad Kahlefeldt, Jarrod Shoemaker and fellow Kiwi, Bevan Docherty.

At the start of the last lap, Don still held a 20 second lead that would prove to be enough as he hung on gamely to take victory and the $200,000 first prize, while behind Gemmell and Atkinson dropped what was left of the lead pack to sprint it out for third with Gemmell just edging Atkinson on the line.

ITU stars shine in San Francisco

It was a case of long course versus short course at the 2010 Escape from Alcatraz triathlon with the men’s race going to a resurgent Hunter Kemper while ITU long course specialist Leanda Cave took home the women’s title.

The 30th anniversary Escape from Alcatraz triathlon certainly attracted a top field on a weekend that was packed full of racing with Wildflower just up the road and St Croix and St George not too far away either.

Andy Potts, Bevan Docherty and Kemper followed Brian McLarty out of the water setting the tone for the race, as they opened up an unassailable lead on the field that included 2007 Ironman World Champion, Chris McCormack.

It was Kemper that prevailed on the run, beating the in form Docherty with a 44 minute run that ensured he was the only person to break the magical 2 hour mark.

In the women’s race it was the defending champion, Mary Beth Ellis, that led the field from the icy bay waters, with 2008 champion Leanda Cave and Jenna Shoemaker right on her heels.

As with the men, the threesome established a lead on the bike that ensured the winner would come from one of them. Ellis was the first to falter and it turned into a duel to the line with Shoemaker pushing Cave all the way to the ‘Sand-Ladder’ before having to settle for second behind the 2007 ITU Long Distance World Champion.
